Angel Food Bakery

by Matt B on June 6th, 2007

Just a few blocks away from my home, I can’t help but notice the Angel Food Bakery every time I pass it. Cute, retro, and with a bright green sign, this corner delight is awfully tempting. It’s filled with lime-green walls, custom-made cakes, and wide-eyed, drooling customers.

Pastry chef Stephanie Samuels is a self-taught artist, and her sweet masterpieces have been featured on the Food Network. Her cakes feature popular combinations like orange with caramel buttercream filling and white buttercream icing, lemon with lemon curd and spiky meringue, and carrot with orange-ginger buttercream. Feeling silly? Try a piece of the Spring Fling, a bright pink flowery dessert bursting with sweet “doo-dads,” or maybe the Topsy-Turvy, a pastel-colored treat with lopsided layers covered in sugary dots. The bakery also offers elegant designs for business gatherings or even weddings.

Not in the mood for cake? (Blasphemy!) Angel Food also offers s’mores, “Airstreams” (homemade Twinkies wrapped in foil), and sour cherry rice pudding. How about an “Igloo,” a chocolate-and-marshmallow dome that seems to be a tasty cousin of the Sno Ball? A popular favorite is “The Barthelona,” a Spanish hot chocolate with homemade whipped cream.
If you want to justify your dessert cravings by having a meal first, the bakery offers breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Prosciutto with creamy brie-and-fig jam on ciabiatta bread and poached chicken with red-onion marmalade on a homemade roll appear on the menu, along with soups and vegetable frittatas. You can even try a 75-cent day-old muffin, which is just as flavorful as it was the day before.

I’ve seen a number of businesses come and go at this location, but with treats like these, it looks like Angel Food is here to stay.
