The Mysterious Miss Chicago

The Mysterious Miss Chicago

While this sculpture is absolutely fascinating, I had a difficult time finding much information on it. Miss Chicago stands 39 feet tall (12 m) and was completed in 1975 by artist Joan Miró.
The more I read about the artist, however, the more fascinated I became. The Spanish-born painter and sculptor received international acclaim for his work in Surrealism. He was actually one of the very first artists to represent this unconventional genre, undoing previously established techniques in art. Not only did he want to take art away from the critics and politics, but he wanted to take it beyond the …read more

The Regatta Has Several Rooms with a View

Located on the south bank of the Chicago River, The Regatta offers its occupants some great views, including picturesque scenes like Navy Pier and Lake Michigan. Completed in 2007, this 466-foot (142 m), 44-story building reflects the glistening water of the nearby lake and river. (Neighbor to The Tides & The Shoreham,) The tower is a symbol of luxury, featuring an indoor swimming pool, rooftop garden, and theatre room complete with surround sound.

Carrie Underwood in Chicago

Carrie Underwood in Chicago

Carrie Underwood has dipped her toe in the pop genre in the past, especially while she was on American Idol, but country is where her passion and talent are. So it’s no surprise that her second album, Carnival Ride, focuses on country even more than her first and is even more impressive. Her (recently extended) tour arrives in Hoffman Estates (a one-hour drive northwest of Chicago) at the Sears Centre on October 3. Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10:00 a.m. (CDT).

Goldstar Events Is Good as Gold

Goldstar Events Is Good as Gold

A few years ago, I spent just about every weekend at the bars. They were great places to hang out and meet new friends. Now that I’m a little older and a little more settled down, I don’t hit the bars as often, but my friends and I still look for places to go and things to do.
A good place to turn to for ideas is Goldstar Events. Every week, the website will send you an e-mail with a list of live entertainment options, all at a discounted price. You can customize what kind of news you’ll receive, just in …read more

Grandmaster Flash: Beats and Books

Grandmaster Flash: Beats and Books

Today, the big names of hip-hop include Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Usher, Rihanna, and Kanye West, but the entire genre owes its very existence to early DJs like Grandmaster Flash. The record-scratching beat we are all too familiar with today started in the Bronx in the ‘70s thanks to Flash’s love of vinyl and experimental engineering.
The legendary mixer will be signing copies of his new book, The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash: My Life, My Beats, tonight in the Hyde Park neighborhood.

Paint the Town Orange

Paint the Town Orange

Near the busy intersection of Clark Street and Belmont Avenue, a long line forms on the sidewalk every weekend. The space is small and the wait can be long, but devoted patrons don’t let that stop them from lining up in front of one eclectic restaurant every week. Inside, the exposed brick and high ceilings, normally highlights in any other eatery, are downplayed by the obvious theme. Orange walls, orange pillows, an orange tree… It should be no surprise I’m talking about a restaurant called Orange.
This dedication to citrus offers delicious juices of all kinds of combinations, freshly squeezed to …read more

Reza’s May Offer More than You Can Handle

Reza’s May Offer More than You Can Handle

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I make for an awful morning person. Fortunately, just a few blocks from my apartment (and a block south of Anteprima) is Reza’s Restaurant, which offers a Sunday brunch buffet that will make you look forward to Sunday mornings.
The lively restaurant is airy and relaxed with polished hardwood floors and exposed brick. The large windows in the front fill the space with light (as does the skylight), and the tables near them are prime spots for people-watching fans.
The Sunday brunch offers dozens and dozens of items, some of which you won’t even find on …read more
