The Chicago Traveler

Sheffield’s

by Matt B on September 12th, 2007

Chicago Cubs fans are easy to spot. Decked out in blue and white, they usually have a beer in one hand and, well, a beer in the other hand too. So it’s no surprise that there are several bars within walking distance of Wrigley Field. However, if you’ve got a taste for something other than Bud Light or Old Style in a plastic cup, you might want to check out Sheffield’s.

Sheffield'sJust half a mile south of Wrigley Field, the bar attracts many of the pre-/post-game Cubs fans. But even on non-game nights, you can usually find a good collection of 20-somethings enjoying the spacious beer garden with ivy-covered walls. Inside, a huge antique bar takes over the main room, while a fireplace and a pool table can be found in adjacent rooms.

Fancy a drink? It could take you a while to decide. The bar features an incredible array of superb microbrews. A 34-page book lists more than 100 kinds of beer, including some of Sheffield’s own brews. Aromatic, light, citric, earthy, domestic, heavy, imported, dark'you name it; they have it. On a budget? The bar also features a “Bad Beer of the Month” for about $2 a can.

Sheffield'sSheffield’s has also recently opened a kitchen, offering barbecue choices like pulled pork, baby back ribs, and a sausage platter. All entrees are served with corn bread and your choice of sides, including collard greens and bacon, garlic bread, fries, and more. The bar makes their own barbecue sauce'Texas Spice, Carolina Mustard and Vinegar, and Good Ole Memphis Hickory Smoke'from scratch, with Goose Island brews serving as the base.

The laid-back feel of Sheffield’s makes it a great place to kick back with friends after a Cubs game or after work, maybe even after a casual date. When the weather’s nice, the patio is usually pretty full, but you usually won’t have to wait too long for an open seat.
