Eat Like a Bourgeois Pig

Eat Like a Bourgeois Pig

In college, I earned my degree in English, and now I appreciate anything with an interesting literature twist. I was intrigued by the opening of Purgatory Pizza, and I thoroughly enjoy the performances by the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. But one of my favorite places to visit by far is the Bourgeois Pig.
You might be a bit disoriented upon first entering ‘the Pig.’ The coffeehouse is cluttered with an array of trinkets and charms: crystal chandeliers, hanging washboards, gas lamps, an old sewing machine, etc. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the various accoutrements, yet they all fit …read more

Center on Halsted Offers GLBT Resources

Center on Halsted Offers GLBT Resources

Situated within the Lakeview neighborhood, Boystown is the home to hundreds of thousands of Chicago’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender residents. Even more pass through the area every day to visit the gay-friendly bars, coffeehouses, and restaurants. In 2001, a group of community leaders shared a vision to create a focal point for the neighborhood. That dream became a reality in 2007 at the Center on Halsted.
This new space provides a safe and modern place for people and organizations to gather and share resources. Along with offices and meeting spaces, the community center also provides free wi-fi, a library, galleries, …read more

Driving Along Michigan’s Red Arrow Highway

Driving Along Michigan’s Red Arrow Highway

As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, I make a monthly trip to visit family in southwestern Michigan. The trip usually takes about three hours, and I pass through several small towns along the way. In fact, in that rural area, it is not uncommon for us to visit one town to go grocery shopping, another town for dining out, and yet another to go see a movie! Of course, all the towns are within a few minutes of each other, so driving from town to town is much like driving to different neighborhoods here in Chicago.

One road that we …read more

Keep Company at Juicy Wine Company

Keep Company at Juicy Wine Company

At Juicy Wine Company in River West, wine lovers browse through the retail space and select their preferred combinations of vintages and complements (pate, olives, and cheese). You can take these purchases home or head upstairs to the lounge. Here, hipsters gab in semicircular booths and small tables while a DJ spins on an elevated stage. Exposed brick with light wood and cork details complete the contemporary space (southeast of Soulistic Studio).
If you choose to sit a spell, the wine list is categorized quite neatly, separated by color and body. A few are available by the glass, but most come …read more

Ten Best Gay & Lesbian Bars 2008

Ten Best Gay & Lesbian Bars 2008

Chicago is renowned for its culture and diversity, bringing together people from all backgrounds and labels. The gay and lesbian community plays a significant part in the Windy City’s population, attracting men and women from less resourceful rural areas across the Midwest. Two of Chicago’s most thriving gay neighborhoods are Boystown (inside the Lakeview/Wrigleyville area) and Andersonville (and consequently its surrounding Edgewater neighborhood). A high concentration of bars, shops, and restaurants can be found among the colorful pylons of Boystown. Andersonville has a few bars as well but is better known for its boutiques and “hip” eateries.
While it is by …read more

Little Attitude at Big Chicks

Little Attitude at Big Chicks

Despite what the name might suggest, Big Chicks is a north side bar that mostly caters to gay men and is miles away from the Boystown scene, both literally and figuratively. Located in the Uptown neighborhood, the bar features plenty of unique artwork and often has a crowd as mixed as its drinks. From preppy boys and jocks to blue collars and “bears,” everyone is laid back and attitude-free.
This watering hole is more than just a few bartenders slinging drinks. Big Chicks often hosts community events, raffles, and free Sunday barbecues. This small bar gets crowded on the weekends, …read more

Big Jones Brings the South to the North Side

Big Jones Brings the South to the North Side

Within walking distance of my apartment, the Andersonville neighborhood is chock-full of “contemporary” restaurants, catering to its chic residents—primarily GLBT couples and newly-30-somethings pushing strollers. Big Jones, a new restaurant in the area (just north of Anteprima), fits right in, providing a modern twist on old-fashioned coastal Southern cooking.
Patrons are greeted with lime-green walls, wrought-iron chandeliers, and dark green drapes. Locals sit at the fully-stocked bar as they wait for tables. The restaurant is usually loud lively and tightly-packed dense, only because so many people are drawn to the delicious menu.
Brunch provides specialties like smoked applewood ham with creamy cheese …read more

Intelligentsia Is Stylish yet Soothing

When you go out for a cup of coffee, you want to be comfortable, right? But too many coffee places expect you to sit on an itty bitty chair at an itty bitty table with no space to relax. Fortunately, that’s not the case with Intelligentsia Coffee.
This Lakeview coffee shop (around the corner from Cupcakes) is full of big plush couches and chairs as well as big wooden tables that you and all your friends can gather around. Low-key music, soft-colored walls, and an exposed ceiling contribute to the soothing atmosphere. Grab a stool at the front windows or even …read more

Smokers’ Sanctuary

Smokers’ Sanctuary

2008 is here, and Illinois’ new statewide smoking ban is now in full effect, joining more than 20 states that now have smoking laws. Indoor smoking is forbidden in all public places, including bars, restaurants, and private clubs. Smokers must remain at least 15 feet from business entrances. Indoor smoking is allowed only in private residences, designated hotel rooms, and businesses that generate 80 percent of profits from tobacco sales.
If you think rules were meant to be broken, remember this: you can be fined up to $250 for lighting up where you shouldn’t, and your favorite hangout can be fined …read more
