There are a lot of secrets in the dining world, but one of the most well-kept secrets are culinary school restaurants. Since Chicago is a big dining town, there are many. If you are looking to have a Chicago fine dining experience on a budget, these places would fit the bill.
These restaurants serve as test kitchens for future chefs. The dining experience matches any regular fine dining restaurant, if not better because the students are trying hard to prove themselves. With an especially strong desire for excellence, students are motivated by both receiving a good grade and a good job– these restaurants are likely to rival those run by seasoned professionals.
Most meals average between $15 to $30 and would typically be priced $50 and above in a regular restaurant. Please note that these restaurants do not hold the same business hours as regular restaurants due to the school schedules. Hours of service are shorter and irregular. Typically they are open a couple times a week. Another feature is that there is typically no fixed menu. The menus change on a weekly basis so it is best to check out the online menus before your visit–unless you like surprises which can be fun. Also, if you dine at these places, most of the proceeds typically go into scholarship funds for the students. It is a win-win for all involved.
Again, please check ahead and make reservations.
