Chicago has no shortage of breakfast and brunch options. Stumble out bleary-eyed on a Sunday morning and even the grease bucket on the corner is probably offering some fried egg hotdog nightmare’there are so many places to grab brunch that it’s easy to make a mistake. Fortunately, you can’t go wrong with Kanela Breakfast Club. The Chicago breakfast-lunch restaurant started in Lakeview just five years ago, but has grown to service Old Town and Wicker Park. Their latest expansion is to Streeterville, just steps away from Navy Pier.

Atmosphere

The Streeterville Kanela, which means cinnamon in Greek, is located at the base of a luxury apartment building. That means having to forgo the neighborhood charm of other locations; however, the restaurant is very beautiful and immaculately designed. The restaurant is full of dark woods and black leather with white walls and tons of natural light from the skyscraper-sized windows. They’ve combined luxury touches like chandeliers with a diner feeling’especially the stools and counter looking into the kitchen. While Kanela may not seem as cozy as the hipster coffee shop you frequent, they do provide free Wi-Fi and have outlets, so sticking around with a cup of coffee is definitely encouraged.

The Food

Kanela Breakfast club opens early (6 a.m. during the week and 7:00 a.m. on the weekends) and serves breakfast and later lunch until they close at 3:30. The menu is the same as their other locations, though the Streeterville shop is currently the only one to serve fresh pies made by Logan Square’s Bang Bang Pie. While I was there, I tried some of their most popular sweet and savory dishes with refreshing glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Monkey Bread

Kanela Breakfast Club’s monkey breadThis childhood favorite has recently been making a big comeback at Chicago restaurants. Kanela’s monkey bread is made with thick, hearty biscuits, walnuts, and topped with honey, cinnamon, and powdered sugar. It’s not overly sweet like you might expect, though quite filling so I’d recommend sharing between two and three people.

Breakfast Sandwich

Between a toasted English muffin are a sunny side egg, tender pork sausage, and fresh arugula topped with a sweet and spicy pepper jam. On the side, there was a bed of crisp, perfectly seasoned small potatoes. Breakfast sandwiches tend to be these bland egg and bacon combinations, but Kanela’s sandwich combined complex flavors into a tasty and filling entr’e.

Coco Crunch Pancakes

Kanela Breakfast Club’s coco crunch pancakesLike the monkey bread, these Coco Crunch Pancakes combine one of your favorite childhood breakfast cereals with three huge, fluffy, and decadent chocolate chip pancakes. Crunchy cereal rests on top of in between the pancakes with rich chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, and white chocolate frosting. These were easily the best dessert pancakes I’ve ever had, though I would suggest sharing them. Next time I visit a Kanela Breakfast Club location, I’ll have to indulge in the Red Velvet French Toast and Nutella S’Mores Waffle.

Bottom Line

Kanela Breakfast Club combines the comforts and nostalgia of eating a traditional Greek American breakfast with fresh, tasty ingredients in a sleek, inviting environment. Whether you visit the new Streeterville location or one of the other three, you’ve in for an incredible breakfast
