Weekend Quickies

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Friday, October 19, Y-ME Illinois will honor all those that have been affected by breast cancer and their supporters. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., The Big Night Out at Union Station will raise funds that will allow Y-ME to continue their work in the community, supporting and educating women. Guests will be treated to the delicious treats of Ethel's Chocolate, Geja's Caf', Garrett Popcorn, Argo Tea, Kim & Scott's Gourmet Pretzels, Starbucks Liqueur, Aveda Institute Chicago, Touch Salons, and Martini Park. A Mini Cooper will be raffled off at the event, and live music will be provided by the Tim Green Jazz Quartet and Shemekia Copeland.

Chicagoween ' The 11th Annual Chicagoween Pumpkin Plaza features pumpkin decorating, spooky storytellers, and a haunted village. (Oct 12-31)

' Join in with the shuckin', slurpin', stirrin', and shakin' at Shaw's Crab House for their 19th Annual Royster with the Oyster. (Oct 12-19)

' Chef Jackie Shen shares her love of beer and fine cuisine at Red Light's East Meets West dinner and discussion. (Oct 18)

Van Halen 'Van Halen performs tonight at the United Center. (Oct 18)

' Achy Obejas, a Lambda-Award-winning novelist, will be reading from her new book, Havana Noir at Women & Children First. (Oct 18)

Anti-Cruelty Society ' The 7th Annual It's Raining Cats and Dogs includes cuisines from over 20 local chefs, live jazz music, live and silent auctions, wine and cheese tasting, delicious desserts, and DJs. Proceeds support the Anti-Cruelty Society. (Oct 19)

' UnderOATH, a Christian metalcore band from Florida, is performing in Uptown at the Riviera Theatre. (Oct 19)

' See vipers, alligators, cobras, pythons, and other reptiles, and learn about their natural habitat at Reptiles: The Beautiful and the Deadly. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum features dioramas, interactive displays, bold photographs, feedings, and more. (Oct 12-Jan 13)

' Vive La Hispanidad celebrates Latin American and Spanish cultures with a night of art, cuisine, and music, including a special presentation of Latin Fire by Cerqua Rivera. (Oct 19)

' Need some Halloween help? The Goodman Theatre is having a costume sale, clearing out its closet for the upcoming season. All items are cash and carry only. (Oct 20)

' Rock on with Brand New at the Congress Theatre in Logan Square. (Oct 20)

' The Illinois Women's Press Association Book Fair, free and open to the public, features readings from nearly 30 local authors on everything from fiction to business to the Chicago Bears. (Oct 20)

' This is the final weekend for Beast Women, a variety show celebrating the freedom, sexuality, life, and strength found in all women. The premise is that the line up for the show changes every night, so the show is constantly new. (ending Oct 20)

' 'The Great Performer' Ramsey Lewis, a native of Chicago and a living legend, will be blessing audiences with his spectacular jazz performances at the Chicago Cultural Center. (Oct 21)

Gay/Lesbian ' The longest running program at Gerber/Hart Library, the Lesbian Book Discussion Group will be celebrating their 20th anniversary with a great lineup of local lesbian authors, including Jorjet Harper and Kathie Bergquist. (Oct 21)
