Dark Halloween

Happy Halloween everybody! Even though it's a weeknight, there's still plenty to do out there in the city…

' The Dead Diner will be serving up Halloween-themed food and drink specials, along with ghostly tunes, horror flicks, and a midnight costume contest with a $200 cash prize.

' Roscoe's Halloween Night offers over $4,000 in cash and prizes in two big costume competitions: Best Costume and Best Drag. Each is limited to 30 participants so be there at 9:00 p.m. to sign up.

' Debonair Social Club celebrates its first anniversary with seven guest DJs and a live video photobooth.

' Casey Moran's, across the street from Wrigley Field, celebrates Nightmare on Clark Street with a food-and-drink package that includes draft beers, cocktails, wine, and a buffet.

' The 11th Annual Chicagoween Pumpkin Plaza features pumpkin decorating, spooky storytellers, and a haunted village.

' Lumen requests your presence at Masque, an evening of surreal decadence and devious disguise. This 'Moulin Rouge'-style celebration features a handmade mask art display and theatrical performances. Complimentary Lucid Absinthe and Vampyre Vodka from 9-10.

' The evil spirits of Halloween are rising from the depths as Navy Pier presents Navy Fear. Enter a 'Salvage and Recovery' facility that houses the remains of angry spirits.

' Dream Theatre performs Jeremy Menekseoglu's Anna, In the Darkness, a thriller about a town that gathers to kill a young teacher trapped in her house.

' Portage Theater hosts the Monster Movie Festival, concluding tonight with John Carpenter's Halloween (1978).

' WKQX-FM Ryan Manno broadcasts live from The Original Mother's and judges a costume project as part of Dead on Division. Guns 'n' Roses tribute band Appetite for Destruction plays live at the bar, while nearby pubs feature other entertainers like fortune tellers, fire eaters, and knife jugglers.

' Stop by the Chopping Block in costume for wine tastings and scary snacks like grilled bat wings, skeleton mix, bacon-wrapped cockroaches, and deep-fried eyeballs.

' Expect the outrageous, creative, and flamboyant at the 11th Annual North Halsted Street Halloween Parade. The parade travels north on Halsted from Belmont Ave to Cornelia St and includes a costume contest for pets and humans. (The most creative outfits I saw there a couple years ago were 5 women dressed as the different phases of Madonna.) This year's theme: 'Fire Breathing.'

' Get 'Shaken, Not Scared' at the Kit Kat Lounge and enjoy great food, half-price martinis, and performances by diva Kayla Crawford.

' Small groups wander through the scary rooms of the Haunted Sanitarium, each its own creepy theme.

' Seadog Cruises at Navy Pier offers a 60-minute Haunted Chicago Tour along the Chicago River.

' Have a scary singing voice? Belt your heart out at Metromix's 'Scareoke Party' at Victory Liquors where prizes are awarded to the best of the worst. The party will also feature scary movies, half-price burgers, and $1 domestic bottles.
