On with the Shochu

by Matt B on September 18th, 2008

What's your favorite cocktail? Gin and tonic? Rum and cola? Vodka and fruit juice? Sure, these classics are great, but perhaps your mixology menu could use a refresher. Have a taste of Shochu.

shochuShochu, a restaurant bar in Lakeview (formerly Platiyo, three doors north of Andalous), is named after a popular beverage in Japan. The alcohol is low in calories (15-20 in one ounce) and is distilled from a variety of starches (including barley and sweet potatoes). Its incredible versatility results in numerous delicious flavors. The lounge offers over a dozen versions of the signature spirit, all of which make their way into a long list of mixed drinks. I particularly enjoyed the Izumi'rice shochu muddled with kiwi and lemon'but if you prefer a stronger, bolder flavor, try the Black Dragon'barley shochu with blackberries.

shochu kobe tartareSupposedly, those who imbibe shochu won't suffer from strong hangovers, but to ensure that, you can partake in the menu's Asian flavors. Food comes in tapas-style small plates or entr'e-sized dishes. Be on the lookout for great maki and nigiri, as well as Kobe tartare, blueberry teriyaki quail, and miso-marinated New York strip.

So when you and your friends are looking for something new, you can say, 'I've got something to Shochu.'

Very cool to see that shochu has made it’s way to Chicago. Did you get a chance to try imu-shochu (made from potatoes)?

It’s pretty good - I’ve had it a couple of times but not enough to test out the no hangover theory.

There were quite a few cocktails and varieties that I wanted to try but didn’t get around to. I didn’t want to test the hangover theory either, lol. I’ll have to go back again.
