Tre Kronor Feels Like Home Sweet ‘Hem’

by Matt B on June 18th, 2008

Tre Kronor (”Three Crowns”) is a neighborhood Scandinavian place that has been around for 15 years, and the well-worn hardwood floors are testament to all the business the cozy restaurant has received over that time. The crowd usually consists of families, locals from the neighboring North Park, and Scandinavian foodies. On weekends, the two-story restaurant has a line out the door, the handwritten menu attracting hungry patrons who show up before the door even opens.

scandinavian flagsThere's not much here that you wouldn't find at similar restaurants, but it's all in the preparation. You'd swear that your long-lost Swedish grandmother was back in the kitchen, carefully watching every detail of every dish. And while most home-cooked 'comfort food' is heavy, the food here is very filling but remains enjoyably light. The establishment is BYOB, so bring your own bottle of aquavit to dinner, where you can enjoy Norsk Lax (broiled Norwegian salmon) or ankbrost (duck breast with lingonberries and apple-port sausage). Of course, most people line up here for breakfast, licking their lips over delectable Danishes, tasty pannekakers, and packed omelets.

Now you can enjoy all that northern Europe has to offer, all without those pesky Vikings or graphic IKEA instructions.

Sounds delicious, my wife and I are going to Sweden and Denmark in 2 weeks so this post definitely piqued my interest!

So wish we could hit up Norway but that’ll have to wait for another time.
