Chicago Coffee Shops without Wifi

There was once a time when people went to coffee shops either alone to decompress or to meet up with friends to converse over caffeine– think Central Perk coffee shop from the show friends. Now people tend to visit coffee shops to sit on their computers, tablets or phones– whether to work, study or just get off of the couch. The days of coffee conversations are dwindling quickly. However, there are still some Chicago coffee shops without wifi enabled inside of them– they may be the great minority, but they offer a welcome change of pace.

While it may seem like a strange concept in a world so connected, but it’s truly refreshing. While there are plenty of bars and restaurants without wifi in Chicago, sometimes I strangely don’t want a beer (shocking, I know). While I find myself working from coffee shops with wifi a good amount of the time, I also find time at least once or twice a week to meet up with friends at a wifi-less coffee shop in Chicago. It gives us a little break from the work day, especially with no email notifications taking over our ears and social media filling our eyes. I leave with a sense of refreshment and ultimately more productivity to finish out my day strong.

It was actually a struggle to compose this article, not because I didn’t have wifi, but because there are so little options these days. Bow Truss Coffee Roasters and Elaine’s Coffee Call used to be favorite places to escape connectivity, but they have now implemented wifi. If this is a new concept to you, I challenge you to try it.

Cafe Mustache is a quaint, homey feeling coffee shop. The seating mimics dining room chairs that you’d find in your home, with the decor to match. They do offer wifi during the normal work hours, however, they shut off the wifi after 6pm to accommodate a more personable atmosphere. They also serve food, beer, liquor, wine, and have live music playing almost nightly.

Besides being one of the few remaining Chicago coffee shops, Kopi Travelers is also a restaurant with a decently extensive menu. They have the staple soups, salads and sandwiches, but also go beyond with breakfast served all day and specialty dishes. Their drink selection (coffee and not) is extensive as well.

La Colombe Torrefaction

3 Locations

La Colombe Torrefaction is a minimalist coffee shop. The decor isn’t abundant, but the use of dark woods and light colors offer a non-distractive space to relax in. The company also roasts its own beans, so there options here that you won’t find very many other places. Drink a coffee, eat a pastry and read a book.
