Weekend Quickies (Sept 12-14, 2008)

' In Roscoe Village, the Harvest Fest celebrates the 100th anniversary of Jahn World Language School with live music, carnival rides, and food vendors. (Sept 12-14)

flag of mexico' The 19th annual Festival de La Villita features carnival rides, live music, lots of food, and arts and crafts vendors, commemorating Mexican independence from Spanish rule. The fair is also the end location of the 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade (with floats, mariachi bands, and folk dancers) on Sunday. (Sept 12-14)

' A new art festival has arrived in Bucktown and Wicker Park. The smARTshow showcases the works of 75 artists inside the Flat Iron Arts Building, along with live music and performance art. (Sept 12-14)

' More than 100 short films from the United States, Germany, Canada, the U.K., and more are included in the Chicago International REEL Shorts Festival. Several genres are covered, and many of the filmmakers are available for Q & A sessions. (Sept 11-14)

renegade craft fair' It's time again for the Renegade Craft Fair, where more than 300 artists sell handmade clothes, comics, jewelry, posters, and more. The event also features a beer garden, food, and live music. (Sept 13-14)

' Take a bike tour through a number of community gardens with vegan food at each stop as part of Veggie Bike and Dine. Stick around for the afterparty at Crust, which will showcase vegan pizzas and a cash bar. The event will take place rain or shine, and remember to bring your helmet. (Sept 13)

' The Q101 Block Party includes live music by two dozen alternative rock artists. Band merchandise, plenty of food, beer, and wine are all available for purchase. (Sept 13-14)

andersonville' Check out the live music, food and drink vendors, and kids' activities at the Andersonville Music and BBQ Festival. (Sept 13)

' Hosted by Banco Popular, the 12th annual Chicago Half Marathon races through Jackson Park and Englewood with prizes for top finishers. A 5K run starts 30 minutes after the half marathon begins. (Sept 14)

' That's a spicy meatball! Eight cooks put their meatball recipes to the test and compete for $1,000 at Ballo's third annual Meatball Contest and Cook-Off: 'Just Roll with It!' Guests are invited to cheer them on and sample the restaurant's meatballs and pizzas for free. (Sept 14)

' That's a spicy challenge! The country's bravest competitive eaters will compete for cash prizes in the 'Feel the Heat' Jalape'o Eating Challenge at Plaza Garibaldi. Can Chicago-native Pat Bertoletti successfully defend his championship title? (Sept 14)
