Going All the Veerasway
I have to admit, as much as I enjoy visiting new restaurants, I have a hard time trying new foods and flavors. When I find something I like, I stick to it. So my approach to Indian cuisine was cautious at best, considering many of its spices and curries are 'exotic' by American standards. I also tend to shy away from spicy mustards, cinnamon, and coconut'all prominent ingredients in Indian dishes. I know I'm not alone in my trepidation. Veerasway in the Warehouse District may be helpful to those of us who need to ease our way into a new cuisine.
This sleek, yellow-bricked spot with slatted wood walls is minimalist yet cozy, setting an inviting and upscale atmosphere. The menu offers standards like chicken tikka masala (tandoor-roasted meat folded in a smooth tomato cream sauce) and lamb rogan josh (braised shank pulled off bone, then folded in a rich onion and cashew yogurt gravy). However, there are plenty of 'Indo-American creations' available, which will appeal to cuisine novices and veterans alike. The salmon dish, grilled and served with saut'ed cabbage and cucumbers in a turmeric-dill broth, is an unexpected delight. Wary diners will find a familiar sight but new flavors in the char-grilled chicken kabobs basted with a sweet and spicy tamarind-date glaze.
Beers from India and England are available, along with specialty cocktails like the 'Bollywood Rehab': effen vodka, passion fruit puree, darjeeling tea, basil seeds, and mint.
If approaching new foods is difficult for you, there's no need to do it the hard way. Do it the Veerasway.
