Raceline Motorworks

When I was a kid, I had hundreds of Hot Wheels cars, which I loved to race around on those bright orange tracks that most of us remember from years past. It’s almost ironic, because I know next to nothing about cars now that I’m older. If you and your children are crazy about cars, there’s a pit stop in Vernon Hills with your name on it.

Raceline Motorworks is a concept store that allows customers to select, customize, and build a remote-control race car and then test it out on the indoor track before taking it home. Much more than a one-time visit store, it can be an all-day destination for the whole family. Founders David Domm, Rocky Jones, and Blake Harper hope to offer much more than a product; they want Raceline to present an experience.

This 5,000-square-foot space offers models from $35 to $150. Kids (and adults!) pick their own car body (10 different car lines to choose from), colors, details, rims, and tires. You can even pick out your options online so they’ll be ready when you visit in person. “The beauty of our store is, we offer all kinds of remote-control cars,” says Domm, “so if you want a monster truck, if you want a Grand Prix racer or sports car, we have a vehicle to fit everyone’s tastes.” There are also “DMV stations,” computers which will take the child’s picture and print out his/her very own “Driver’s License.” Once they’ve got their parts, their License, their title, and a full membership, customers are ready to assemble their race cars with the help of knowledgeable staff. Organized races and an “off-road” obstacle course are set up for the new drivers to test their wheels on.

After a few laps around the track, Speed Racer will have nothing on your little guy/lady.
