Cubs Win 10,000

On Wednesday night, the Chicago Cubs became the second major-league team with 10,000 victories. And their opponents, the Colorado Rockies, certainly didn’t make it easy for them.

wrigley field marquee cubs winIt took the Cubs ten innings to defeat the Rockies, coming back in the ninth on a two-run homer and then a two-out RBI single from Ryan Theriot. The exciting game was the Cubs’ sixth straight victory this season and was the franchise’s 10,000th win. Only the New York Giants have more with 10,192 (as of Wednesday).

Of course, most of this year’s team had no idea about the milestone, nor did they seem very enthused about it. “It just means you’ve been playing a long time, and unfortunately there haven’t been too many titles to go with it,” general manager Jim Hendry said.[1]

Not to mention the winning streak ended on Thursday in a 4-2 loss to the Rockies. Theriot, who had helped achieve the outstanding landmark just the night before, literally dropped the ball on a potential double play. The eight-inning error allowed the Rockies to score their winning run.

Cub fans can only hope that the team’s 10,000th win won’t be their only high point this season.
