Pocket Puppies
Is bigger really better? It seems we’ve been busy shrinking everything down, from our cell phones to our computers to our mp3 players. But what about our pets? Pocket Puppies in Lincoln Park is the only store of its kind in Chicago, specializing in teacup and toy-sized breeds. Dogs of this size can weigh anywhere from 3 to 15 pounds. The store carries Maltese, Chihuahuas, yorkies, pinchers, and shih tzus, as well as a number of others. Many are small enough to fit in one hand and certainly big enough to fill your heart with happiness.
These dogs are cute as all get-out, but remember, they require special attention and extra care. Pocket Puppies is selective about whom it places these precious packages with. Each puppy is also hand-picked from choice, reputable breeders in the area. The owner, Lane Boron, meets each breeder and checks the facilities from which the pups come from. An in-house veterinarian monitors the store’s dogs on a near-daily basis and gives each pup an exam when it comes in.
Ranging anywhere from $1100 to $3000, these puppies are definitely an investment. Smaller dogs, when taken care of properly, can live anywhere from 15 to 18 years.
The store also carries plenty of small-dog accessories, including designer jackets, beds, leashes, collars, toys, and more. Your pooch can also be pampered with a relaxing massage treatment or aromatherapy grooming services.
These tiny pups are a huge responsibility, but for the right person, they can bring big rewards.

I have never in my life been more appalled by the behavior of professionals in the pet industry than I am with that of the staff at Pocket Puppies.
I had been taking my Maltese to Pocket Puppies for grooming for over a year. On this particular day I was racing across town and got stuck in traffic, the place was closing in 10 minutes and I was about 15 minutes away. I called to let the staff know I was running late but was on my way and was told “no problem”. I arrived about 13 minutes later, and to my shock and horror the lights were out, door locked, and staff gone… WHERE WAS MY DOG? I had JUST spoken to them!
I tried repeatedly to call hoping that the line would forward to a live person, but to no avail. I waited for hours hoping someone would remember her and come back but they did not. I spoke with a police officer who tried to help me find a way to reach an emergency contact. The store is NOT registered with the police or fire department in case of emergency (which is illegal), and the officer told me that he had been to the store earlier in the week because the owner’s dog bit a child.. not the first time, he said.
Finally, I saw a sticker from the alarm company and called them to explain the situation. They were able to put me in contact with the owner who seemed oblivious to my hysterics and said he would come over to let me in. Before he showed up, the night person came to feed and water the puppies. I explained the situation to her, she was shocked, and she let me in to help me find my dog. She was unaware that my dog was there, and when we went down to the basement, we found her alone in the dark in a cold metal cage with no food or water. Had I not been there, that is exactly where she would have stayed until 11am the next morning… 17 hours after closing time.
These people care about one thing only, and that is money…. it is truly a sham that they proclaim to care for their animals or the others for whom they provide services.
