The Chicago Traveler

Weekend Events

by Matt B on August 16th, 2007

Head of Femur, a Chicago indie rock band, will be performing at the Logan Square Auditorium tonight. After going through several musicians to fill out and complete their sound over the years, the group is now settled on a five-piece lineup. Staying true to their trademark funky sound, they continue to produce inventive and bold music. Be sure to catch this free show before the band begins its three-week nationwide tour.

too much light makes the baby go blindThe popular open-end show “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” continues on this weekend as it has for the past nineteen years, making it the longest-running show in Chicago. People come in droves, forming lines around the block, to experience the fun the Neo-Futurists offer. From the moment you walk in the door to the second you walk out, every moment is like none other. The price of your admission ticket is determined by the roll of a die. Seriously. It’s $7 plus whatever number you roll on a six-sided die. When you walk into the theatre, an usher will ask you your name so he or she can write you a name tag. After you tell the helpful attendant your name, you will receive a sticker with the word “Frankly” or “Terrycloth” or some other random word written on it. The show consists of 30 plays in 60 minutes, the order of which is determined by audience participation. The collection is always different, so spectators often come back finding new laughs. And if the show sells out, everyone gets free pizza! How’s that for incentive? Be sure to come early though; the theatre only seats about 150 people, and it’s first-come, first-served.

air & water showThere will be plenty of noise going on at Lake Michigan as the 49th Annual Chicago Air & Water Show takes place this Saturday and Sunday. While the “main stage” and play-by-play will be given at the North Avenue Beach, more than 2 million people will watch the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, the United States Army Parachute Team Golden Knights, the Red Baron Squadron, and several other air and water performances all along the Chicago lakefront from Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street (a 2-mile stretch). Pilots will reach speeds up to 700 mph and reach heights of 15,000 feet (more than ten times the height of the Sears Tower)! With the masses of people heading toward the largest two-day spectator event in the country, you’ll be much better off taking public transportation. The water show begins at 9:00 a.m., and the air show runs from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
