The Chicago Traveler

Ride Smarter

by Matt B on June 14th, 2008

With the rising costs of gas, more and more people are turning to public transit to get where they’re going. Now, Google Maps can help guide your way.

Just enter your start and end points. If available for your route, you’ll see the option to “take public transit.” You can even see bus and train schedules, so you’ll know when to set your departure time. Step-by-step directions are available both in text and on the map.

In addition, the Chicago Transit Authority has recently released the CTA Bus Tracker. Select a route, direction, and transit stop in the Estimated Arrival Times Window, and you can find out approximately when the next bus will reach that location. The Bus Location Map will actually show you the locations of the buses as they move through the city live. Best of all, if you can access the Internet on your mobile device, you can pinpoint the very stop you are at and won’t be left wondering, “Where is that bus?”

Over 30 bus routes are currently available on the Bus Tracker, and 20 more will be offered on Monday, June 23. More lines will be added in the weeks to come.
