The Chicago Traveler

Hotel Allegro

by Matt B on July 9th, 2007

I know when I have the opportunity to travel a lot, many of the hotel rooms begin to look the same. That’ll never be the case though with Chicago’s Hotel Allegro in the middle of the Randolph Street Theatre District.

Remodeled in 1996, the Hotel Allegro has not forgotten its 1920s art deco roots. Bold patterns and bright colors can be found throughout the building, creating an upbeat atmosphere. Musical and theatrical imagery prepare out-of-towners for the arts and shows they’re bound to experience in the downtown neighborhood. After all, right next door is the Cadillac Palace Theatre and the hotel is within walking distance from the Legendary Chicago Theatre, the Goodman Theatre, the Civic Opera House, and the Chicago Opera House.

As soon as I walked into the lobby of this boutique establishment, I knew I was in a different kind of hotel. With blue French velvet and red velour sofas and leopard-spotted drapes, there are plenty of “clubby,” funky pieces to entertain the eyes. And a reception area that serves candy? Woo Hoo! Sometimes, it really is the little things. The nearly 500 rooms are adorned with lively colors and ridiculously comfortable beds with Sealy Posturepedic mattresses and soft down comforters and pillows. Want a goldfish to keep you company on your stay? No problem! Or feel free to bring along your own furry friend; the hotel is pet-friendly.

There are 31 suites with Jacuzzi tubs, a few of which are themed “Lion King” or “Second City.” Plenty of package deals are available as well. Feeling romantic? Try “You’re the One that I Want,” which includes a bottle of champagne, a bowl of fresh strawberries, and fresh rose petals. Like to party hard? The “Wild Night” package offers a cocktail pre-party in your room, VIP access to clubs (no waiting in long lines!), and even an option for a late check-out, so you can sleep in the next morning.

Hotel Allegro is a great, unique experience for travelers (and locals!) who enjoy art, music, and theatre.
