Taxi Surcharge Passed

by Matt B on April 12th, 2008

If you plan on taking a taxi anywhere in Chicago this summer, you’ll be paying a bit more than usual. Especially if gas prices continue to rise.

chicago taxiOn Wednesday, City Council unanimously approved an unprecedented cabfare surcharge that is dependent upon the price fluctuations at the gas pumps. The surcharge takes effect on April 28, requiring passengers to pay an extra 50 cents whenever gas prices are over $2.70 a gallon for seven straight days, and an extra $1 whenever the price exceeds $3.20 a gallon.

According to www.fuelgaugereport.com, the city’s official determinant, gas prices were already at $3.52 a gallon as of Wednesday.

It seems nobody is happy with this decision. Riders feel the surcharge is unfair, because it applies equally to all rides, regardless of distance. For example, even if you’re only traveling 7 blocks, you’ll be paying the same extra dollar as someone traveling 7 miles. Taxi drivers argue that the extra dollar isn’t enough to make up for the rising gas prices, which are likely to hit $4 a gallon this summer.

At this rate, it may be a good time to take up walking, biking, and taking the CTA.

I’ve been taking transit in Toronto forever now. While I don’t remember anything like this specifically happening in Toronto, the general price of cab fare was something that really turned me off that mode of transportation.
