Potter’s Secret Chamber

by Matt B on May 24th, 2008

A little over a month ago, the Palmer House Hilton opened Potter's, a sophisticated bar and lounge. It's named after Potter Palmer, the Palmer House founder, and replicates the style and elegance of the 1920s with a modern, sleek look.

potters palmer houseLocated inside the hotel, Potter's is open to the public, but not many people outside of the Hilton know about it. This lush, secret spot includes an intimate seating area with comfortable dark-leather chairs and plush sofas that perfectly seat two. The dimly lit bar a few steps away is bordered by glass-enclosed columns filled with white feathers. Pictures of Chicago's most influential historical figures grace the walls, including Hugh Hefner, Nat King Cole, and John Belushi.

The cocktails are classic also: Kir Royale, Whiskey Sour, Singapore Sling, Gin Fizz. If you'd like something to snack on with your drinks, Potter's offers an upscale menu by Chef Phillip Foss. Try the truffled potato chips or Kobe-beef silver-dollar 'sliders.' Even heartier are the Scottish salmon sandwich (served on a pretzel bun with braised endive, pears, and whole grain mustard) and crab cake sandwich (with shaved fennel, tomato, and aioli). Or just stop in for the sweets like classic cr'me br'l'e or profiteroles.

Once you enjoy the quiet style of Potter's, you might just want to keep this secret to yourself.
