Weekend Events

by Matt B on August 24th, 2007

Think country-western can’t be couture? Macy’s hosts the annual Glamorama, a fall fashion extravaganza. This year’s theme is The Good, The Bad, and The Beautiful. The rodeo will meet Rodeo Drive tonight at the Chicago Theatre at 8 p.m. Guests will be arriving via red carpet beginning at 6:30 p.m. Keep an eye out for Food Network chef Cat Cora and country music star Gretchen Wilson. They’ll be attending for sure, but past attendees have included Ellen DeGeneres, David Schwimmer, Pamela Anderson, Ryan Seacrest, Brooke Shields, and Queen Latifah… so who knows who else could show up this year! This fashion and music charity event raises money for the Art Institute of Chicago. Fifty models from Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami will hit the runway wearing clothes from designers like Marc Jocobs, Maschino, Calvin Klein, Just Cavalli, Michael Kors, Donna Karan, John Varvatos, Temperley London, and Alberta Ferretti. The post-party at Macy’s includes appetizers, music from DJ Ruckus, mechanical bull rides, and much more.

glbtqChill Magazine and Think Pink Radio have come together to create Chicago’s very first GLBT music festival: Queer Fest Midwest. This all-day Saturday celebration will benefit About Face Theatre and WLUW (a progressive radio station) and features local and national GLBTQ music acts and art shows.

As of the year 2000, Chicago has the 3rd highest Latino population in the country, with Latinos making up 25% of the city’s inhabitants. The 'Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival celebrates this diverse group of people through music, dance, food, and art. Tens of thousands of people come to enjoy the traditional food from local and international merchants as well as music from around the world, including cumbia, salsa, tango, banda, reggaeton, merengue, bachata, and rock en espa'ol. Headliners include Moenia, Mike Roman and the Tell Stars (featuring Jose Feliciano), and Rakim y Ken-Y.
