Moo & Oink

by Matt B on July 25th, 2007

Moo & Oink is a Chicago staple and considered by many to be Chicago’s barbecue palace. And if there’s one thing this store is known for in this town, it’s their commercials, starring Moo and Oink, the dancing cow and pig.

This grocery store’s history traces back 150 years through several generations of butchers. Today, there are four Moo & Oink stores in Chicago, and their products are available in grocery stores all across the country. The oldest existing store is on Stony Island, while the one at Madison is the largest city location, housing a full smokehouse. No matter which location you shop at, this is the place for barbecue meats. The freezers are stocked with a huge assortment of pork and beef, and on the weekends, they actually cook it up for you, so you can taste what you’re about to buy.The warehouse-style shop is packed with poultry, spice rubs, fish, barrel-size jars of barbecue sauce, dairy, salad dressings, and vegetables (including collards and kale) as well. Even if you’re looking for specialty cuts or offal, you can find it here. Moo & Oink sells various organs, tripe, and pigs’ feet by the bag.

Moo & Oink has a loyal following of customers, due to the store’s quality, service, and value. Their logo is probably one of the most recognizable trademarks in Chicago. But when you go, you have to try the house-cured hot links; they’re legendary.
