Olive Oil

by Matt B on August 1st, 2007

I’m not much of a cook. It took me years to master macaroni and cheese. But even I know that when in the kitchen, a great olive oil can make all the difference. There are a remarkable number of olive-oil stores popping up all over the city.

olive oilAt Oil & Vinegar on State Street, the name says it all. This boutique opened not too long ago, but the concept has been a hit in Europe for a long time. As soon as you walk into this shop, the first thing you notice are the vessels on the back wall, filled with about 30 different extra virgin olive oils and 15 vinegars from all over the world. Everything here is “on tap.” Just choose an empty bottle, and buy the amount you want. Or browse among the shelves, which are stocked with plenty of pre-bottled goods like dressings, olives, pastas, herbs, dried tomatoes, pestos, and bruschettas. There’s also a sweet section of vinegars for fruit. And you simply can’t leave without sampling the international foods and spices. More Oil & Vinegar stores can be found in Skokie and Algonquin.

Just a few blocks from my home lies another mom-and-pop olive oil shop, City Olive. The health benefits of olive oil are what prompted owner Karen Rose to get into the business. “The extra virgin olive oils are high in anti-oxidant properties,” she says. Here, just around the corner from Huey’s, you’ll find 24 extra virgin olive oils from nine different countries, and tastings are held daily. Yum! City Olive also offers a wide selection of infused olive oils, vinegars, mustards, pastas, sauces, an extensive line of sea salts, and of course, olives.
