Little Vaudeville
The technology of entertainment is moving swiftly along. CDs, mp3s, mpegs, DVDs, high-def' It seems as though the moment we imagine the next step, it already exists. However, there was a time when none of this existed. Before television, before radio, there was Vaudeville. And amidst all the gadgets and doodads of today's society, vaudeville remains alive and well in Arlington Heights at Dickinson's Little Vaudeville.
Vaudeville was a genre of entertainment common in the United States and Canada from the 1880s until the 1930s. Types of acts included musicians, comedians, magicians, acrobats, dancers, trained animals, impersonators, and more. Many of the skits performed were akin to today's television sitcom and are an important part of America's entertainment history.
The students at Little Broadway (ages 5 to 15) may be far from the theatre district of New York City, but their performances have been entertaining audiences all across the northwestern suburbs. Whether or not they actually expect to continue this interest in the stage, all the young ones have a lot of educational fun. Not only do students get to perform various stage acts, but they also learn about American history during the vaudeville era.
Whether these students are paying tribute to George M. Cohan or dancing to Shirley Temple, the students (who perform at various charitable events) are having a great time learning that there's no business like show business!
