The Chicago Traveler

Forbidden Broadway

by Matt B on April 30th, 2007

A little piece of Broadway has found its way to Chicago. However, this isn’t the stuffy, high-brow stuff we’re all familiar with. No, this is Forbidden Broadway: Special Victims Unit, a musical comedy full of spoof lyrics and considered by many critics to be the funniest 90 minutes in Chicago. If you’re at all familiar with any Broadway shows, you may see a few familiar scenes, but with a few new words…

Les Miserables (a three-hour play): “At the end of the play we’re another year older / And we’re all getting exhausted from playing the poor”… “God, it’s high / This song’s too high … Change the key / Bring it down, bring it down / It’s too high, it’s too high”

Wicked: “Suddenly I’m defying subtlety / With death-defying lack of subtlety / I’ll capture world renown / I’ll blow the Gershwin hub because / I am the loudest witch in Oz / And no one’s gonna turn my volume down”

Everyone in the superb New York cast has also actually been in the shows they’re spoofing, so they are all too familiar with the madness and grandeur of musicals.

Forbidden Broadway has been running for over 25 years, constantly being rewritten to poke fun at new shows. It is a four-person show, currently featuring Jared Bradshaw, Valerie Fagan, Jeanne Montano, and Michael West. Playing through July 1, the comedy runs for approximately 90 minutes, including an intermission, and full-price tickets are $45.
