The Chicago Traveler

You Suck!

by Matt B on January 20th, 2008

I am, by no means, a morning person. I wake up very grumpy and disoriented, no matter how much sleep I may have had. I probably feel at my best in the afternoon and evening hours, and it's not uncommon for me to stay up long past midnight. Some might even call me a creature of the night. However, there are folks out there whose fondness for the evening is on a whole different level.

vampireFor hundreds of years, vampires have scared the living daylights out of us. However, Martin Riccardo, a Chicago-area vampire folklorist, has found that they are a great source of curiosity and intrigue for many people. He feels that many of us actually identify with the stereotypical vampire image in some regard, whether it be the often loner-type lifestyle or the sustenance of life through other people.

In fact, a modern-day subculture has flourished, embracing people from all walks of life undeath, all with one thing in common: an attraction to the dark and macabre. Geoff Harkness, who studied sociology at Northwestern University in Evanston, filmed a documentary which explores this unusual scene: National Vampire. He and his crew spent more than two years traveling around the country, attending vampire-related events and interviewing dozens of people. And while many of these vampire fans may dress oddly or even don a pair of fangs, they generally have no intention of actually harming anyone. Those who claim to have vampire-like qualities (or to actually be vampires, even) often prefer to get their 'rush' from people's emotions, sexual energy, or even thunderstorms. There are numerous online forums on the subject, as well as vampire magazines and gothic dating sites!

So keep your eyes peeled and your necks covered. The next time you're feeling drained' it could be the fault of a local vampire.
