Comedian and Chicago native Bernie Mac died early Saturday morning from complications due to pneumonia.

Bernie Mac had suffered from sarcoidosis, an immune system disorder characterized by small inflammatory lumps usually on the lungs. He had been staying in Northwestern Hospital for the past week.

Mac grew up on the south side of Chicago, was a White Sox fan, and as a kid had been known to practice his material on CTA trains. He may be best known for his work in the Ocean’s series, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, The Original Kings of Comedy, and The Bernie Mac Show.

This saddened me when I heard about it yesterday afternoon. I had no idea he was even ill, so at first I didn’t believe it was true.

I watched his show with my kids and always loved the underlying message – as well as the mess he usually got in. I think we both had similar thoughts on parenting. What a great comedian and it sounds as though he as a great person as well.
