Not Fine Dining, Mr Greek Gyros Holds Its Own
Right in the middle of Greektown, Mr. Greek Gyros is open 24 hours, and it’s a good thing too because most of its clientele stops by after a night out on the town. Whether your cravings come at 2 p.m. or 2 a.m., this little restaurant makes up for its bare atmosphere with great cooked-to-order food.
The menu is massive, running the gamut from hot dogs and tacos to pork chops and chicken wings. But this is “Mr. Greek,” so focus on the Mediterranean specialties. Although a few people swear by the pizza puff here, the gyros are where it’s at, along with the Grecian chicken and souvlaki (pork and veggies grilled on a skewer). Just remember that the souvlaki may take a little longer to prepare, as it’s cooked on the fire. Get a combo for lunch, which includes fries and a drink, or go for a full-sized dinner served with garlic bread and two choices of side orders (small salad, fries, or rice). And full-sized doesn’t mean full-priced either. Dinners average less than $7.
Sure, there are plenty of classier sit-down restaurants in the area (like Greek Islands and Santorini), but sometimes you’ve got a yearning for something fast, inexpensive, and tasty. Mr. Greek has got your fix.
