Noble Horse Theatre
Occasionally, while downtown, you can spot horses pulling carriages throughout most of the day. But at night, they truly let their star quality shine at the Noble Horse Theatre in the Old Town neighborhood (just a little over a block west of Wildflowers).
Constructed in 1871 after the Great Chicago Fire, this facility is one of the oldest buildings in Chicago. It stabled as many as 60 coach and riding horses for local Chicagoans when horses were still the primary mode of transportation. It is Chicago’s last remaining Riding Hall.
Former Marine Corps Mounted Guard Dan Sampson purchased this 137-year-old stable in 1985. The building was in bad shape, but after several years of renovation, it was up and running again in 2000. Three equestrian shows are now held in this castle-like setting: Quadrille, Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and The Nutcracker. Audiences of up to 300 fill the seats, which are tiered so everyone has a good view with no obstructions.
Shows are held year round and last about an hour, each ending with a Meet & Greet. The theatre also features a gift shop and concession stand, and meals can be ordered in advance for group matinees and evening shows. All performances are BYOB.
The shows are great for kids and adults alike and are nothing less than amazing. And that’s straight from the horse’s mouth.
