Hot Doug’s

There are literally hundreds of hot dog joints in Chicago, and it can be difficult to discern one from another. However, Hot Doug’s has one unique feature that you can see before you even walk inside: a line of hungry patrons that not only falls out the door, but actually crawls around the building! Locals are willing to wait as long as 20 minutes to get inside. Just what is it they’re all waiting for?

Hot Doug's Doug’s menu may not look spectacular, but its flavors are sublime. The menu starts off with the classic Chicago-style hot dog and is followed by “The Elvis” (Polish sausage, smoked and savory), “The Paul Kelly” (bratwurst… soaked in beer), and “The Keira Knightley” (mighty hot!). And for you non-meat eaters, the veggie dog is probably the best in town. But don’t just stick to what you know; Hot Doug’s also serves up a Game of the Week, which can be anything from rattlesnake to kangaroo to elk. Other specials include a calvados-infused duck sausage, a spinach and feta chicken sausage, and a rib eye steak sausage with chimichurri sauce. And of course, you can’t have a good dog without fries! Get them slathered in cheese, or, on Fridays and Saturdays, have them in their most sinful form: fried in duck fat.

And just when you thought things couldn’t get any better, the man behind it all is cheerful and witty. Doug cracks jokes and takes down the orders, all while keeping the hungry crowds in line. With his charming demeanor and delicious wares, he may easily become your new best friend.
