Cafe Mediterra

Many folks in the South Loop area were fond of the coffee shop Gourmand, but fondness doesn’t pay the bills. Gourmand closed its doors and reopened as Café Mediterra, a Middle Eastern eatery with a new look and a new menu. Owner Mutaz Abdullah gutted and remodeled the space and has managed to find his own niche in the neighborhood.

cafe mediterraThe revamped café serves as an excellent study spot, offering a quiet earthy atmosphere in pale greens and browns. Sip on tea, coffee, or a smoothie while you enjoy the free wi-fi.

If you need some brain fuel, the new menu blends together American and ethnic foods. For breakfast, start your day out with a brioche French toast or a Grecian omelet filled with spinach, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, and feta cheese. Complete either with the hash browns and a delicious latte. At lunchtime, go with the spiced lamb burgers, steak sandwiches, falafel, or any of the salads and sandwiches all at less than $10. Dinner entrees include spicy grilled shrimp kebabs and Mediterranean skirt steak, each served with the rice of the day. And who could pass up the cheesecake for dessert? Orders are placed at the counter, and the staff will deliver your meal to your table.

Stop by, and enjoy one of the few places in the South Loop where you can chill on your own or impress a date without busting your budget.
