Intermix

If you’re looking to get decked out in cutting-edge, high-end duds from head to toe, look no further than Intermix. It’s what every fashionista in Chicago is talking about.

intermixIntermix exploded into the fashion scene when its flagship store opened in New York City in 1993, and although locations can be found across the country, its first Chicago outpost just recently emerged in the Gold Coast (just a block away from Tails in the City and Le Colonial). Chicago’s growing fashion scene is nothing to be scoffed at, so this store fits right in.

“Intermix” literally means “to mix things up,” and that’s what this store is all about. Shoppers are encouraged to mix and match labels and designers. The concept here is all about creating an outfit by mixing and matching different designerwear from clothes, shoes, and even accessories.

This 4,000-square-foot fashion mecca carries garments from both the high and low ends of the fashion spectrum and is divided, not by brand, but into three sections of style—clubby, street/casual, and everyday—and they’re all brimming with today’s hottest looks. You can find big name brands as well as lesser-known unique designers like Stella McCartney, Matthew Williamson, Rory Beca, Madison Marcus, Ella Moss, Diane von Furstenberg, Missoni, Geren Ford, Splendid, C&C California, and more. You’d think you were browsing through the costume department of Sex and the City.

But the clothing isn’t the only thing that defines Intermix; the store’s design is also unique. The inspiration behind the store layout is a woman’s body. The racks are curved, just as a female body is, allowing the shopper to easily move from one end of the store to the other. This “body” is stocked with everything from $40 headbands to $2500 handbags, but when you shop here, you do more than just spend. You can give back to the environment by purchasing a gift card. Intermix is supported by Conservation International, and whenever a gift card is redeemed, $5 will be pledged to support initiatives reducing global climate change.
